I’d say take the time off & put yourself first. 80k is more than enough money, some people don’t even make that much in a year. Life is too short, money & a job can come again not time.
I'm in your position except I don't have an 80k cushion. If I were in your position financially I'd definitely take the time out. If you're employable you'll find something when you're ready and back up to 100%.
Personally, I wouldn't take that chance with the economy looking the way it is right now. You may need that cushion if you end up losing your job long-term.
$80,000? Take the time off.
As someone who previously took time off employment to heal from burnout (and now in the same boat post a termination caused on by burnout), I encourage you to take the time off.
Your mental and physical health will thank you for it. Just be sure to plan some activities and enjoy some hobbies to keep busy. It’s *very* easy to literally do nothing but sit home all day. You can also do some upskilling when your brain is ready to process new information.
Quick advice: Burnout caused me physical and mental strain that my body and mind were ready to give up (I was walking with a cane during my first burnout season and before I resigned). My recent termination was due to having so many personal responsibilities and not setting aside time to just do something for me (planned vacation away from everyone and responsibilities for a bit, etc.). Anxiety and depression was worsening and you won’t know it until it hits you *hard* (boiling frog analogy). Learn from my mistake and spare yourself the career stress of possible termination in making too many mistakes at work and take the time ooooooff.
All the best to you and get the rest you need! 😊
You have $80K at your disposal? Why don’t you buy a multi unit property and rent it out so you can make passive income? That way you can take time off but still be making income but also building equity.
Can you speak to your boss about burnout? Maybe they can adjust your workload and allow you to take some time off. Unless you want to completely leave this company.
Have you looked at taking leave? You can short term leave just get notice from your doctor and open a claim with MetLife. About 6 people from my team has left for stress leave
echoing the leave option here! maybe try for a sabbatical too if possible? maybe i’m just too risk averse but i’d hesitate quitting without a job lined up
Others have said this, but depending on your field, maybe look at exhaustion short team leave, PTO, etc. However, at the end of the days you know yourself. If taking an extended leave is right, do it. Put yourself first, but have a plan (outlined at least) for building your network back up when you’re ready to come back.
I don't think it is a bad idea at all. Take some time off if you need it. That is the best thing you can do for your mental health.
