Microsoft is hiring an account executive and I’m really interested in the role. I have B2B sales experience in a different industry, but my skills include lead generation, prospecting, account management, negotiating, etc (all within the C Suite and other decision makers).
Would appreciate knowing if this is something I have a shot at with no tech sales experience and what I could expect for promotional opportunities and compensation.
Thanks for the help!

Staying put and earning an internal AE promotion at a known SaaS logo is a very solid long‑term asset, but it can be slower. Smaller startups sometimes promote faster and give you more scope, but they’re riskier (layoffs, comp changes, no enablement), so a lot of people do 1–2 years at a reputable company to learn the craft and then go smaller once they’ve got that foundation
Stay and get the promotion. Startups are super rocky right now, depending on the size ofc. Internal promotion shows you accomplished your goals and performed at a high level.
Being at a company where that is even possible, reason enough to stay and work on the internal transfer. If you aren’t at a company that does that, learn all you can and jump to something else with a better title.
