I don’t have any real suggestions other than things probably haven’t changed as much as you think in terms of the nuts and bolts of the agreements and forms
Very cool that you are making a change and I often think the grass is greener (my situation is good but during a busy week I think I’m a clown for not sticking it out at a firm)
Mentor
A1, I’m a real estate lawyer and have no regrets about going in-house.
As a transactional real estate lawyer, I’m a bit of a specialist - there are only 2 of us out of over 30 lawyers in our department who focus on real estate transactions - so maybe that’s part of it.
Off topic but what’s the reason for going back?
MP1 - I think my situation may be particularly bad, but it is a problem. Especially with family owned companies if you aren’t a family member. I’ll be doubling my pay just by walking out, and that’s only the base pay.
Just curious, many years did you practice before going in-house? Is this firm cutting your class year by a lot?
I had 4 years in government (affordable housing development), 3 years big law, and one year small firm before going in-house for 11 years total. Class is irrelevant to my new firm. I’ll go in as of counsel for a year and then decide if I want to put in for partner. That gives me a year to build business and get back into things. Their structure and culture is very unique, which is why I’ve decided to give it a go. Their associates are on a 5 year track normally, which is much faster than comparable firms, but they emphasize mentoring and letting associates get their hands dirty early - with supervision. They also encourage them to build the practice they want - no silos. I’ve worked with them for years and know their attorneys well or I might be super skeptical about what they say. Plus, the “interview” process was extremely transparent. I honestly don’t think I would be going back to a law firm under any other scenario.
