For private companies, how does equity appreciate (or does it)?
You have to do your due diligence. Some private companies (tech startups) don't really have much of a market until they go public. So the equity is only on paper because you can't easily liquidate. But it does change everytime they get raise money. Your equity is "repriced" at the new valuations.
Established private companies should spell out how you can/must liquidate the equity and how they will value each share.
