Chief
I saw that post too but didn’t want to question it as they did seem to have been treated badly. Their idea was bought by client and is now on air.
But there’s no such thing as being laid off as a freelancer. You can have your contract cut short but it’s not a lay off.
Chief
Said they were completely cut off. Sounds like they had no credit.
Nope and nope
Agree with ACD1. That’s what freelancing is.
They may and should have the expectation that they will be credited as creating the work, and included in all public communication as such.
This is why you charge MORE as a freelancer, people!
None of this divide-by-X-days based on what a fulltimer makes. Get your full freelance dayrate so that you at least have money to protect you from being screwed.
Junior $500/day
Mid $800
Senior $1K
ACD $1200
CD $1500+
Why did you agree to such a low rate?
Yes and yes, but not legally. Keeping them on is the right thing to do, just like letting the team that came up with an idea produce it, even though asshole CDs sometimes take the plum for themselves because they can. Asshole agencies say “no and no”.
I’m sorry but as a freelancer, I am paying for your ideas. If a client buys your spot, there is no way I am paying your day rate through a month of production. That’s crazy. I’ve produced a million commercials and am fine producing yours.
Of course, you can put it on your reel and market yourself as best you can. I have no problem giving you credit. I am the agency/cd who was smart enough to buy your idea, so I will market it as well.
Creatives have it tough IMO and there are a lot who are new to freelance now and not of their own choosing (so many laid off last year!) Many were not coached on these realities. Try to have a heart when producing their ideas, maybe even share the end product. Think about your own future and building a network..how would you want to be treated?
Yeah I understand. I have experienced the thoughtlessness happen, so I meant it to infer “the least you could do..”
Agree with “no and no”.
