Ok be honest, candidates. I really love this set of questions, I’ve been considering shifting my current interview style to these questions - I think they really give you an idea of who this person would be within the work setting. But the questions almost feel too deep for a recruiter to ask. What would you think if a recruiter took a different path and asked these questions instead of the usual ones?

My dad's a senior software architect getting 35 lpa for 18 years work experience in cognizant. His tech stack is AEM and he has worked on angular and Java Projects as well. Since he is getting underpaid a lot ... Hopefully someone can refer him Adobe or some product companies. Even service company with good pay also is acceptable

After the initial few years as a senior manager you essentially are a partner intern.

SMs have sale and revenue targets.
Guys relax. It was 6:00am. Woke up to feed the kids and missed that part. Chill out.
Rising Star
SMs are expected to be able to manage entire teams on a day to day basis. Think through the engagement from start to finish and meet deadlines with high quality work. At least at PwC, it’s essentially the highest you can go without showing potential to make partner. While you need to be good with clients, you don’t necessarily need to be sales focused. A good SM that can sell work likely will advance to director with the aim of making partner. Managers are also supposed to manage teams and associates below them but aren’t necessarily burdened with managing entire engagements.
EY SM is the same level as PwC Director. PwC SM is a placeholder position or otherwise a polite way of saying “not yet”.
Rising Star
Manager in EY doesn’t have a sales target? How about directors in EYP and Sr. Director?
FWIW, EY4’s description sums it up for Accenture as well. SM may arguably be the worst level… sure TC has increased but if you do the math on your hourly rate, you will not feel warm and fuzzy.
Cons:
- Grunt to the MDs but actually accountable for quality, i.e. you need to get “it” done quick and it better be right
- Delivery responsibility as a 9-5, everything else outside those hours
- You have larger teams but aren’t close to most of the team members unless you really make a point to get in the trenches. I try but there’s just not enough time in the day.
- MUCH less control over your promotion prospects than at junior levels since there just aren’t as many MD roles to land
- The internal processes are death by a million paper cuts, financials, forecasts, on boarding, contractors, performance reviews, recruiting, data protection, legal, etc. MDs want nothing to do with this stuff and Managers are too junior to navigate them
- Responsibility with no real authority.. still need MDs to approve everything which means constantly re-explaining whatever it is you need from them (quarter end forecasts, approving a contractor, offer for new hire, etc.)
- Providing SMA support to other engagements
- Still accountable for plus ones around the practice/company with the zero time you have left
The list goes on and on… it does almost feel like pledging a frat/sorority at this level just trying to make the cut. And then they pay you just enough to make you think twice about leaving but not enough to reward you for all of the responsibility.
Thanks, insightful answer. It’s actually helpful ☺️
