Is 59K decent starting salary for Market Research Analyst in NYC for a fresh graduate?

Not really. Fresh undergrads make 70-90k base in consulting nowadays. On one hand, you could make the case that 59k for a 9-5 with no travel is better than 80k for a 55 hour week plus travel. On the other, 59k base for an individual is quite good given that median household income in NYC is just over 60k. Get a comparably paid roommate, and the earner will be in a clearly above median household! https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/nycdata/income-taxes/med_hhold_income.htm

In the attempt to be helpful, I should add more to the comment above....
As others have pointed out: take it if that is all you have right now so you can transition later. Also.. if this is a wfh position I can see that being reasonable assuming you can live farther from the city. My concern is the col of the city and how limited you will be with this salary after taxes if you have/want to live in the city. Good luck

Is that bi-yearly?

likefunny

Yes, it’s very decent. You gotta be careful asking these questions on this platform

No

Nope

like

I’d expect at least 70k, and even that’s tough in NYC

like

It’s not great. I worked as an entry level market research analyst (not at a consulting firm) in Boston in 2014. Starting base salary was 55K.

like

No. Not even if you’re living with your parents. Definitely cannot live in NY on that salary.

like

Nooooo

Lol nope bro

Not even close.

What exactly does a market research analyst do - other than “market research”

Depends on what your other choices are. And what the firm is. If that’s your only offer and it’s with a small firm, then you probably have to take it.
If it’s with a bigger firm, you could probably negotiate. If you have another offer, you can use that to negotiate. Otherwise it’s your best and only offer.
In general, the range for a fresh grad in consulting is 65-85. Getting more than 85 needs a top firm essentially. So you’re a little below consultants but can’t answer more without knowing more about the job

I recently joined Swiss Re at 30lpa, pretty good manager and work culture. Got a hike of 10% in 3 months without me asking for it. But got an offer from another company which I was interviewing for before joining here and they are offering a base of 45lpa. Now I am unsure how I convey this to my manager coz I want to stay here but at the same time I am salivating over this new offer and wish I get similar numbers here. Is it worth raising a discussion? If yes what would be a subtle way to do so?

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
