Is 59K decent starting salary for Market Research Analyst in NYC for a fresh graduate?

Not really. Fresh undergrads make 70-90k base in consulting nowadays. On one hand, you could make the case that 59k for a 9-5 with no travel is better than 80k for a 55 hour week plus travel. On the other, 59k base for an individual is quite good given that median household income in NYC is just over 60k. Get a comparably paid roommate, and the earner will be in a clearly above median household! https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/nycdata/income-taxes/med_hhold_income.htm

In the attempt to be helpful, I should add more to the comment above.... As others have pointed out: take it if that is all you have right now so you can transition later. Also.. if this is a wfh position I can see that being reasonable assuming you can live farther from the city. My concern is the col of the city and how limited you will be with this salary after taxes if you have/want to live in the city. Good luck

Is that bi-yearly?

Yes, it’s very decent. You gotta be careful asking these questions on this platform

Nope

I’d expect at least 70k, and even that’s tough in NYC

It’s not great. I worked as an entry level market research analyst (not at a consulting firm) in Boston in 2014. Starting base salary was 55K.

like

No. Not even if you’re living with your parents. Definitely cannot live in NY on that salary.

Nooooo

Lol nope bro

Not even close.

What exactly does a market research analyst do - other than “market research”

Depends on what your other choices are. And what the firm is. If that’s your only offer and it’s with a small firm, then you probably have to take it. If it’s with a bigger firm, you could probably negotiate. If you have another offer, you can use that to negotiate. Otherwise it’s your best and only offer. In general, the range for a fresh grad in consulting is 65-85. Getting more than 85 needs a top firm essentially. So you’re a little below consultants but can’t answer more without knowing more about the job

In these times, if your referral bonus is $1k or less for seasonal employees you are asking for: 1. Employees who put in work to refer people that end up negotiating a part time option don't work on referring anyone else. 2. If the potential new hire gets an offer, employees have 0 incentive to convince them to accept it. This can even lead to them giving negotiation tips which get the new hire a $5-10k higher offer. They may even recommend accepting a diff firm's offer straight up.

I have a manager who doesn’t seem to like me very much. Talks to me in a super condescending tone like I wasn’t an experienced hire & know what I’m doing. He will flat out ignore me even on calls when I say hi or good morning. I’m not sure if it’s because he’s “old school” but once had other team mates in his office (all male) for lunch and didn’t invite me (the only female on this team). I thought I had a super progressive team but every day is telling me that’s not the case.
