Yes. Signing bonus is one time, while your base sets your comp trajectory during your tenure at the firm. A higher base can cost the firm many multiples of what a signing bonus costs.
Higher base is generally better for the employee due to total base trajectory - over the course of your career you’d likely make more.
Obviously this is not as good for the employer… hence the signing bonus
Yes. Signing bonuses get people in the door, and then the companies hope that complacency and intangibles keep people for low bases. The sad part is that it is actually an effective strategy because most workers aren’t willing to move around enough to take advantage of it.
