You'd need to have a work visa anywhere you decided to work right? And you'd have to navigate the tax laws of every country you work in. I don't see how any company would ok this - I think a lot of people just aren't following the rules.

Very little chance. There are multitude tax and regulatory issues associated with a “work from anywhere in the world” approach

I have had many discussions with many clients on this topic and I know if not a single one who went to global work from anywhere after those discussions.
Just imagine this ONE simple scenario then multiply by tens of thousands:
You’re employed by PwC US. You decide to work from France for a year. You don’t get approval. You have no valid work visa in France. You’ve created a U.S. permanent establishment in France. France is now entitled to US firm profit through taxation. You may have created a works council issue IF you are an authorized worker. The firm now has to provide you French retirement and healthcare benefits. The list goes on.
No leading firm will do this

Workday consultants are fully remote for some/most partners.
Not for international remote, at least for the big 4 partners.
We have up to 20 days where you can work remote internationally I’ve heard but even that you have to get approval for and I’m sure there’s complications with client data and timezone differences.
McKinsey Product person here and work remote
