Hi Fishes,

I have been with the organization almost 6 years and have accomplished achievement of my MSL (Masters Strategic Leadership) and LOVE the organization…BUT…I am not having any success in moving into a new position…my interviews are great experiences but it seems to be a pattern of not being selected yet encouraged to continue applying…received information from a mentor/manager to ask for candid feedback…when is enough…ENOUGH??

Not to get philosophical, but you have to be a strategist if you’re a copywriter.
Aren’t we all?
All copywriters are. But definitely not all strategists are copywriters.
👋 But to paraphrase Luke Sullivan, every copywriter should be a closet strategist
I'm an art director/copywriter fusión
Yes. It’s the new term for writer on the client side, it seems.
I did some of that as a freelancer. In the DC area it opens up a lot more opportunities.
Yes indeed here. That and some other things!
It happens. But not as often as people are suggesting here. I came up that way, and I think my ability to think strategically and creatively has played a big role in my journey. I’ve never seen it come to life in a formal title, it usually takes the form of a writer who shows he/she can work upstream and then gets pulled into more strategy-driven work. Then it’s a choice of what side you want to be on.
It wasn’t my official job title but that’s basically what I used to do! (Yes I am looking for work btw!)
Yeah I think that describes me very well right now since I'm at great branding agency. Any questions I can help with?
Thank you so much for this advice. I definitely agree that I would adopt a very junior mindset when it comes to copywriting and creative direction. I have a lot of respect for those great creatives who can be strategic, and those who welcome and appreciate strategy.
There is so much that goes into concepting a good idea, and I completely recognize that I don’t have the education or background, and years of practice that this required to do this well. It’s not just sitting around coming up with ideas and writing stuff. It’s a science. I would definitely be very humbled, and happily so, to start dabbling in copywriting.
I really do want to learn, and gain experience, and I know this will take some time. I am happy to invest this time, but I don’t think I would be comfortable taking a full year off work to go back to portfolio school.
I would love to, and I wish I did when I was first starting out my career. But now I’m in my 4th year of advertising, I’ve finally reached a pay grade that is liveable lol, and I’ve got a mortgage application coming up. Financially it isn’t ideal.
I love your suggestion of reading and studying on my own time. This is exactly what I’m trying to do, but i would love some advice on exactly what to read and study.
Does anyone have recommendations from what the studied in ad school?
I’d like to keep working in strategy, while investing my side time in learning and practicing copywriting.
I’m not supposed to be.
A great CW can think like a strategist. And a great strategist understands creative. Even if the role doesn't explicitly say so, you should wear both hats no matter which job you have.
