Is it common for a 401k plan to let you roll over funds into an IRA when you haven’t left the firm the 401k is with? My 401k fees are brutal and flexibility is limited compared to my Vanguard IRAs.

If you are currently an 'active plan participant', you are stuck until you leave the company.

like

It’s not common but it’s known as in-service distribution - just call Fidelity and ask a rep if your plan allows those and they will confirm

like

Will do. Thanks!

My 401k is through Fidelity and I work for Slalom if that helps at all.

Usually I don't think so. Fidelity has a lot of low cost index funds. Your plan doesn't give you access to anything low(er) cost?

I read the 401k plan documentation and it said the fees are based on my portfolio size in proportion to other Slalomites’ portfolios. So doesn’t seem to be away to minimize fees other than to make my portfolio smaller

The plan provider keeps a percentage of your capital appreciation for operating expenses. This 'expense rato' is normally a fraction of a percent. Normally from .05%-1%.

I see two crowds these days. One thinks housing market will crash. The other thinks housing market will soar.

The contrarian in me makes me think this is a decent indication that housing market will stagnate (or increase minimally) for a few years.

As a general rules, I feel like the majority cannot foresee a crash/surge coming. The prevalence of such expectations would hamper the pre-conditions necessary for such a dramatic change.

So investing 12K every month in market. My worry is with that rate - it will take us 12-14 months to move the extra 75-80K mentioned above. However do not want to make a bulk move. Any advise how to plan the switch. At present have 60K invested in stocks. Thanks

I think living a frugal life and aiming to retire early makes a lot of sense.

Recently, some of my family members are diagnosed with a rare diseases. When you look at the statistics, these are so many of these ‘rare’ conditions and cumulatively they are not rare.

These family members conditions made me reevaluate how I want to spend my life. I am 35 this year and I can’t decide if I should take great vacations with my kids or keep living a frugal life. Do you have the same dilemma?
