Happened constantly when i joined my current firm. slowly faded away once i built some rapport, but it’s still there.
I can relate. It's frustrating when teamwork feels unbalanced. Do you think she might need more direction or support?
As a legal assistant, I would like to be a team, but sometimes it just isn't going to happen. You both need to pull the weight equally.
Maybe they’re overworked or overwhelmed?
I can’t speak for the OP, but I can assure you in my instance the legal assistants who didn’t want to help me were entitled and lazy. I said what I said. After I left that firm, there was a layoff and the lazy and entitled legal assistants were sweating bullets because they knew they couldn’t pull off their antics anywhere else.
The great legal assistants I knew and I still stay in touch with left that firm for better pastures. The lazy ones stayed because they knew their antics would not be tolerated anywhere else. One retired because she was on the chopping block.
If it’s a case of being overworked or overwhelmed, they need to have conversation conversations with their paralegal partners.
This issue is not uncommon unfortunately. I experienced this and it never really got better. Just keep asking the person to do their job without emotion and don't take it personally, it is a them problem, not a you problem,
I hate to say it, but this is very common. I don’t wanna paint with a broad brush because I know some amazing legal assistants some of whom I’m still friends with to this day. But there are some who just don’t want to help you, even if it’s their job to do so.
I usually saw this kind of behavior with older legal assistants who hid behind their partner. I wish I had some good advice, but honestly, I don’t…. just know that this is very common.
Right? That happened to me. The partner found out and he was surprised. After that it stopped. Always helped.
Common issue. I have only encountered one or two LAs over the 10 years who would do a task (that was absolutely within the job description, FedEx label, e file, etc) I would ask them to do. They usually don’t unless an attorney asks them.
