I believe it is illegal, company's will try to tell you this is a "no no" so that they can pay some people poorly.
The NLRB states you are allowed to discuss pay without retribution. That said why would you want to if they prefer you don’t?
I don’t mind being part of your problem. My salary puts me in the Top 1% of earners in the country and my staff loves me. They will be sad when I retire at 44.
Not legal, just self serving for the company to not have to worry about underpaying people relative to their peers.
It is very rare that “peers” have a one to one match in experience or quals.

Raise/salary always to keep to yourself. Not sure why anyone would talk about that with colleagues.
However, promotion is different. How would you hide a promotion though? Your title would change and you’d most likely note that on your linkedin.
A1 I am with you, I don’t think everyone has to know everyone’s salaries. There are too many factors that determine pay.
No. It is not. The NLRA makes it illegal and the NLRB issues guidance. If they harass you, file a complaint with your local labor commission.

I have been in a hiring position much of my career and never requested this. At the same time, I don’t really care what people think because I try to pay a fair wage and reward performance. I am hiring a couple of people - not high level positions - and really thought about what was fair and reviewed salary guides. If I’m paying someone more it’s because they earned. If you’re not that person and want to complain, I hope you’re ready for an honest and respectful conversation that might be more than your were expecting.
Agreed there are rarely cloned employees.

Probably legal to tell you that, maybe not legal to take an adverse employment action if you share.
Whether you should or not depends on whether you would benefit or be harmed from lower pay variance among employees. Most people have the impulse that employees should be paid basically the same, and pressure the company if that’s not the case. If you’re a high-performer, this means the company can’t pay you as much if everyone knows. If you’re average, it’s probably neutral. If below average, transparency helps you.
No. Employers will try to make you think it is illegal to make sure you don’t share salary information and that they are probably underpaying people. They don’t want to deal with employees complaining that someone doing the same job is paid significantly less just because they been working the job longer.
It’s just easier for them to try and intimidate employees to not share this info than it is to be transparent in their salary structure.
If you work for a federal contractor or subcontractor it is illegal. You can file a complaint with the OFCCP.

I’m not an employment lawyer so I could be wrong here but my understanding is that they’re allowed to ask you to not to discuss your pay but they’re not allowed to outright prohibit or punish you for doing so.
I think that’s correct. Had a friend that was told not to discuss it so we got legal advice and was told that was illegal. They ended up not filing any complaint or anything though for whatever reason. Wasn’t worth the hassle given their situation
