Is it normal for attorneys to swear at you? Or be rude towards you when there’s something that goes wrong but it wasn’t your fault? How frequently should I let it slide by? Should I say something?

It is not appropriate, but it does happen. How you deal with it depends on your situation. In some cases it works to tell the person they shouldn’t treat you that way. In others, you might just set yourself up for more bullying that way. Another solution is to leave. Good luck and I am sorry you are having to deal with an a$$.

It's interesting that most comments say it's not normal. I must have a big X on my back. It is not unusual for some, not all, attorneys to swear, yell, and complain. One said he would always say if he was wrong. Rarely happened. Mistakes happen. The toxic atmosphere usually creates more mistakes than a more professional atmosphere. If your attorney is a partner or someone who carries a lot of weight at the firm, they already know the attorney is a jerk and aren't willing to do anything about it.

like

Yea can’t fight a rainmaker.

It isn't normal for anyone to speak to you in a disrespectful manner. These attorneys have a lot of nerve and it's utterly disgusting. I've been a paralegal for over 20 years and believed that I had no choice but to accept the toxic things that happened. Leave as soon as you can and do something different. You don't have to put up with abuse and being in a toxic environment.

like

You should leave. People like that don't change. Offices like that don't change. It should not be permissible behavior, period.

like

We have zero tolerance for that at my firm. They will often swear around me but never to me/other staff. I would immediately be in with HR.

like

Absolutely notttttt to any of it. I would say something to your HR department or upper management about that. That is unacceptable behavior.

like

Normal yes, acceptable no. I document this behavior until you figure out how you’d like to proceed. (Not talking legal action but at least have some sort of proof to back up your claims when you choose to confront them or hr about it).

Or simply say I see you’re upset. I will come back later when you’re much calmer.

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

Hi friends,

I'm a new joinee in MSFT.

People in my team they don't come with me for breaks. (They blame the timings are different since they sit in crits but i don't think so because they have their own group of friends to go with)

Secondly, when my team members see me in cafeteria we expect they'll sit with us but people here are being rude they directly go and sit with their friends they don't call you to join. ( atleast they could have said they are accompanied)

People behave unpleasant

How can the attorney you work for make your life easier, make it easier to do your job, make you less stressed?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I recently left a large lawfirm to go in-house which came with a huge paycut that is not going to be sustainable long term, but needed a remote position to be able to move. I'd like to keep my current job part-time but get back in a lawfirm too.
