Is it possible to move to big4 as an S0 from a less prestigious firm? How often do they do lateral hires that are not that experienced?

That’s a tricky one because Big 4 typically has people move down a level to ensure they have time to acclimate, learn firm software and methodologies, etc.

So for a newly promoted senior, they might try and bring you down as a staff 2

I have seen even experienced associates from midsize firm hired as seniors at big 4. It is definitely possible - don’t listen to anyone who says it’s not. Make it clear that you only want to interview for senior associate roles when you speak with them. At the end, it all depends if you do well during the interview and if they like you in general. Prepare to answer tax-technical questions, show you can be a team player, and maybe train new people, if necessary.

I got hired as a “Senior 0” at a big 4 about 2 weeks after i was promoted to Senior at a regional firm. So it definitely is possible. Although this was in late 2021 and we are in a completely job market now unfortunately.

I would just interview for Senior positions and see what happens. If they ask you to take a step back and come in as an experienced associate wouldn’t recommend. At that point I’d just wait until you have a busy season as a Senior under your belt and then reapply

I have worked in municipal government for almost 17 years. I love what I do as an Inspector, but the environment is toxic, and administration horrible. I have an opportunity to go into the private sector side, as well a second interview for another municipality doing same job. Concerns are: private sector and when recession hits, it’s construction, away from hubby

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck.

If you’re a manager and you see an employee that wants to branch out into a different department, why would you keep them boxed in for 2+ years?

Are there some background mechanics that I’m missing?
