any telltale signs of layoffs in tiger?
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Ok be honest, candidates. I really love this set of questions, I’ve been considering shifting my current interview style to these questions - I think they really give you an idea of who this person would be within the work setting. But the questions almost feel too deep for a recruiter to ask. What would you think if a recruiter took a different path and asked these questions instead of the usual ones?

It's generally true that it's easier to get a job when you've already got one. But that's not to say you can't find a job after being laid off. First of all, people are certainly aware that being laid off happens to people regardless of their ability. So it's not really a devastating blow. However, the longer one is out of work, the worse that can look.
Yes it's true. Here's why, your confidence is not as strong, and desperation or nervousness shows in your communication. Additionally, the law of averages are key to finding a new job. I had to create 10 different versions of my resume. I reduced it down to 10 years of work history. Lastly don't allow those applicants counters discourage you. Linked will say that 100 applications have been received. However, the resume viewer is only going spend about 30 minutes looking at resumes before moving on to the next job req especially if it's a busy company. Also, most of the resumes do not match the job requirements.
I usually put down the time between getting laid off and finding a new job as freelance. Which, is actually true. Sometimes you don’t plan it, but there’s nothing wrong with freelancing in between jobs. I’ve freelanced for years before taking a new FT position. And sure, during that time you may not be super busy all the time, but many times you are. It’s still work, even if not FT.
It's true that its easier to get a job when you have a job. Why? It's the same reason as it is the "dating game." If someone else wants you, they want you too. If nobody wants you, why should they? It sucks. It's like people with a bad credit history have to pay higher interest rates. They have a bad credit history because they didn't have enough money to pay their bills on time. So now you are going to make them pay even more money that they don't have.
I don’t know that it is harder to find a job while not employed per se. However, it does get more difficult to find a new job with that gap in employment ever expanding. But in general, the job market is rough for everyone and none of us are doing to well.
But it’s easier to take a freelance gig that could lead to full time when you’re not working.
