Is studying for (and hopefully passing) the CFA a good alternative to an MBA for career advancement? Background: Currently in M&A advisory. Not looking to move into research or portfolio management, just seeking to add an "advanced degree". I would love to go back to school, but cost and my location - not near any major schools - have kept me from applying. I have considered Kellogg's eMBA in Miami. #cfa #mba

I have both and they’re totally different. MBA is the most expensive networking event on earth but can have a great return. CFA is pretty technical and impactful but in a more narrow manner. If not in equity research or investment management, I don’t see the CFA as being a significant career accelerant.

like

No they’re two different things. CFA is more for credibility in the investments and research field. MBA is more for moving up or into a different field.

MBA > CFA for the vast majority of people and career paths.

Feel free to dm me. I am an active advocate against the CFA. Unless you are at a job you love that is sponsoring you to do it, ab advanced degree is almost always better. It’s 3 years of terrible awfulness with a marginal benefit.
