What’s your PhD focus, and how much time left to complete it? For most people, I would say it’s definitely worth $100k. When you get into the $250-300k range, it’s a tougher conversation. At $100k you’re likely to see a high career ROI. I’m assuming as a PhD you’re currently on a stipend.
Couple years left to complete, focus is in tangential business field (i.e. courses are a mix of business and non-business) but not based in business school. With total loans, I’d be pushing 200k with MBA
Is your PhD from the business school?
I’ll check it out - thank you!
No it’s not worth it. With a PhD you can recruit at any big name consulting firm and pivot to PE eventually. Look into Advanced Degree opportunities. You’ll enter same level as an MBA. Source: JD who recruited along with MDs and PhDs
I’d ideally love to go directly into PE/VC and not have to come back to consulting which is why the MBA is alluring lol
Most MBA students can't go directly to PE/VC from MBA, unless they have prior experience in that, or at least investment banking already. Talk to your school's careers office for more info on this. Don't sign up for 100k in debt only to wind up in consulting or banking like you could already do anyway.
Ohhh this makes sense. I asked how many were prior/IB and career services gave me a generic answer. Thanks for the insight M2
IMO, you should do an MBA only if you are in need of and looking to gain access to a great network of people (assuming you do it at a top school)
Yeah, it’d be a M7. Just unsure how much I’d gain
