Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

That's interesting, I'm curious why they did that. For me, cash is king. I can invest on my own and have more control over where my money is going if I have a higher base salary. Anything else doesn't really make sense to me.
That's the only scenario I can think of where it'd make sense. I don't know if I'd ever push for that on my own, but I could see myself accepting it if offered.
It’s all about the taxes baby. You’re taxed on salary income immediately, while stock options are essentially deferred until you cash them out and deal with capital gains.
I could see doing that if someone had absolute faith in the company's prospects. If you were that confident, and if you could live on the lower salary, it could be a smart move. It would be a gamble, but perhaps a bet worth taking.
I was actually given stock as part of a bonus and wasn’t even comfortable with that. Sometimes companies can be really volatile and this particular company CEO decided it was going to make “an accounting change“ and ended up basically almost pulling an Enron right after Enron.
You never know what people will do, as in Enron‘s case.

The only issues with stock is that normally there is a vesting period. The best I’ve seen is 4 year vesting at 25% a year. So if you do ever leave you would lose some vesting.
