You can usually tell... distracting employees, looking for cameras, pacing, etc....
I actually had some guy ask if there were cameras in the store and then try to distract me with another task while he tried to shoplift. It worked...he distracted me into calling the cops.
Due to the possible expense of confrontations and litigation outweighing the value of lost goods, many retail establishments advise staff members not to confront alleged shoplifters.
I once chased a shoplifter along the street and out of the shop. I got reprimanded by management. At the moment, I was a little irritated. But now I see it was not worth the risk, and they were right to chastise me.
I occasionally had a teen try to obscure it from my view. But I'd just ask, "Can I scan it too please?" for the joy of watching their face, and they'd get all panicked and stuff and pay and go away.
I've seen a large amount of junk stolen. I'm not trying to get in the way if they really need it that badly, you know? Who am I to possibly prevent someone from providing for themselves that day when you never really know what they are going through?
It is not worth the risk to me personally to stop them, and I'm not going to get into a fight with someone who is desperate enough to steal in the first place unless I work in a jewelry store and am paid a commission for the recovery of stolen goods.
LOL they make it too obvious. Shout out to the lady who tried to stuff 2 sweaters and 2 belts under her t-shirt at my first clothing store job.
And to those people who would come and literally spend over 30 minutes in the store trying to be sneaky. Like we know what you're doing, we can't stop you, so just leave, and save us (and yourself) some time. Thanks.
Why are stores so afraid of lawsuits? Arrest these petty thieves.
I've seen a lot already. And in different ages. Distracting the employees is one of their ways.
