I took all my interviews on the work laptop. People take recruiter calls all the time on work phones. Who cares?

like

I also got an offer phone call while at my current office. One of the more annoying partners I work for ended up hovering around my open door waiting to talk to me. I held up a single finger to signal they would have to wait while I wrapped up the call saying it was excellent news and I looked forward to receiving an email follow up. Quite possibly the best feeling I ever had in that office.

like

I did it when the partners at new firm called me at work to give me the offer. This was when no one was coming in though.

I’ve done it.

Took my first vacation (1 week) in over a year to visit family. Was bombarded by emails from one partner asking me to complete non-time sensitive motions, which he hasn’t even bothered to review. This is my third firm in three years (first I left as I was severely underpaid, second I left for a 100k increase in salary), but this lack of respect for my boundaries has made me want to move again once I’ve completed 18 mos. Bad? They don’t do this to the other associates (all male).

How do you guys handle someone else taking credit for your work?

A colleague keeps running point on my projects and regular work. I do 80% of the work (strategy + execution). Her involvement is much smaller yet she’s established herself as the main person for this area of marketing.

I have little visibility for my hard work and it’s frustrating nobody sees my contributions as “mine”. They ask her questions she then ask me. Bc we’re remote nobody sees what’s happening and I’m demotivated.

Advice needed. I’m leaving an incredibly toxic work environment (admin, students, parents, etc) for my dream job. I already resigned, but my students don’t know yet. I knew if I told them, their behavior would be even worse. How would you explain to the kids you’re leaving? I don’t want my P to know I’ve been hired elsewhere, so I don’t want to tell them I have a new position, but I also don’t want them to think they ran me off (or that I got fired, lol). I’m leaving next week.

what do you talk about in your 1:1s?

I got lucky and now have leadership that seems to care about my career growth, but I'm 1. a little overwhelmed taking over a new role from someone who went on parental leave earlier than expected and 2. not used to thinking outside my day to day job, happy to keep my head down and just produce good work.

most of what I bring up in these meetings are logistical or prioritization concerns but I feel like my manager is expecting a lot more from me.

My manager put a surprise calendar invite twice now to go to home office without consulting dates to see if we were available. How do you deal with teammates who don't take initiative or move things forward on a project without being told to do so?

We have a deliverable due on Friday with alot of things to get done before then and seems like no one cares? I ask for status updates and all I get is no, haven't done that, will do it now. Sure enough, ask next day and the response is no, haven't done it yet.

These folks are seniors as well. Partner looks to me to provide a status update, and all I can say is in process.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.
