It took me 4-5months to start and probably 2 months before I got an interview. So upwards of 6 months in total. Then orientation took 3-4 months and they had me orientating other new hires before I was done orientating. I stayed because Im a vet as well but now Im leaving because of lack of leadership. So now the goal is management to stop this problem at the root.
LinkedIn is a great tool my friend. People like talking about their jobs, and like helping out vets. Virtual coffee chats to learn more about what they do at that level are a start and don’t put pressure on them to “get you a job.”
Have you thought about having your resume professionally optimized? I had this problem a few years ago where I wasn't getting any interviews so I had my resume professionally optimized by someone on Upwork and it really seemed to make a difference. I started getting tons of phone calls and interviews. Sometimes just a few tweaks can make all of the difference.
