I've been in the same job for 8 years (longest tenure in my career) and I was looking at a friend's LinkedIn profile. He's been at 5 companies during that period. With ramp times that can go from a year to 18 months and sales cycles that are 9 - 18 months long in the SaaS space, how does one succeed by job hopping so much?

Hopping jobs every few years leads to increase in base and OTE. That's why I do it. Also I'm generally successful in every role I take and if there's another role willing to take care of me and pay more and offer me all of the same perks and benefits then why not?

Growth comes from challenge and going outside your comfort zone.

It's tough because some solutions take a ton of time but I'd focus on outcomes and if possible launch or provide a poc or a smaller test environment and see how you can monetize that for example.

likehelpful

It depends which SaaS solution you are selling to, your role in the company new business/growth, segmentation ? commercial/enterprise, revenue target. For instance a new business role, it would 3 months to learn the solution, after 3 months build up pipeline for a commercial AE. Another 3 months to close the sale. Job hopping in tech is ok as long as your backing up in your interviews, the why behind it

@Mete - I guess my question is: "how does one crush the quota if they're constantly jumping from one company to another?".

A lot of folks in my network are in a role 18-24 months. Account Execs to Director to VP. Seems to be the norm

like

I agree, it really does seem to be the norm in todays world.

Are you sure your assumptions are right? 12-18 months seems like a wildly long ramp period and not all software takes is on that kind of long cycle - some SaaS is even sold transactionally on one call closes.

I'd challenge you that your org is not doing a very good job if it takes a year and a half to ramp reps on average.

8 years is a long time in sales these days. What's your actual role, if you don't mind me asking?

Now that makes sense. I can see why some people stay as an IC. Management is nothing but headaches

Hey all,
Im looking to pivot my career from industrial design to product design or product management.
At the moment i manage a team of 5 industrial designers for b2b sustainable fashion and retail interiors. The methodologies and processes are quite similar between physical and digital design so i feel i should not start from a junior position, however my portfolio contains only physical. Did anybody else make a similar career switch? Any advice for switching to product is welcome. Thanks!

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?
