I’ve been on the bench for 5 months, about to start 6. I’ve had projects lined up, and then client postpones or cuts scope which includes my role. Time to move on? Very frustrated here.

Max bench time is 90 days then it's time to look. If your firm does not have work to get you on a project in that timeframe it means one of three things. First is they are overstaffed and are having difficulty putting people in place. Two partners or directors are holding you back for selfish reasons so they get managed revenue. Third they are in a week sales cycle and banking on things that may never happen causing your career to be hurt. Do what is best for you.

like

What have you been doing with the bench time?

like

This is the answer we expect to hear, instead of doing nothing. Make sure keep “bosses” aware of what you have done.

Happened to me at Slalom. I was constantly told I would roll onto A or B project, but those were not even close to being signed. Yet, my boss would not put me on a cross-market engagement. In my case, other practices would ask to cast me for their engagements-since I had a big network and had multiple capabilities. But I felt blocked and people would come back and tell me, ‘Hey, we asked for you but were ignored.’ I found a different firm. I can’t sit idle like that. I have skills and I want use them, continually progress my career. It was killing me to be that bored. Making a ton more now, so it worked out.

I've been on the bench for months because there were a couple of higher value projects that kept stalling and pushing back dates while others got staffed on lower rate roles...

It's frustrating and I've considered leaving too during that time because it eats away at my utilization and ultimately impacts my bonus.

like

I’m in the same boat as you...to avoid looking like I jump too often, I plan on doing an internal transfer

Need to find something, and never reserve yourself for a project that isn’t starting immediately. I’ve been there, where you are, and lost about 4 months utilization that year. Not recommended. Reach out and find a role where you can start now.

like

At this point, your brand isn’t strong enough to get you staffed within your current organization. That can follow you for years. Spiff up your resume and start applying to other firms. You will need to spend some time on framing what you have worked on during the past 6 months.

like

Are others in your office/practice having the same issue? If it’s market-related, can you move within your firm, at least for the next project or two? If it’s just you... not so good. Can be bad luck but get some honest feedback from seniors you trust.

Others are in the same boat, but probably not as long. I’ve reached out and gotten a lot of feedback, including my coach, it doesn’t seem personal just market. I’ve been on three projects so far, two of which I was in a role that was not aligned to my practice or skill set - so I’m not even doing the work I was brought in to do

Is there a corporate way to bring up to senior leaders that an IC is causing issues across multiple teams because they are demanding and also doesn’t collaborate well? The IC gives vague “direction” then says they are too busy to clarify. They also refuse to use our project management/ collaboration tools.

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Thanks in advance :)

Is it really that difficult to get hired for a federal job? I was interviewed for a GS12 job but never heard back, they still didn’t hire anyone and I didn’t get a rejection. I applied for another GS07 job, was accepted, I took it, but I believe I can do better. I have a master’s and have extra graduate research experience. I am still applying to new jobs but I was told it is impossible to move up the grade level now. Everyone is telling me to stick with the government. What are your thoughts?
