You haven’t even been there six months. It’s a bit early to request a switch. At this point, asking to change managers is an aggressive move on your part. Your manager may not be perfect but they’re more experienced then you, they’re been at the company longer than you, their boss relies on them to get things done. You need to see things from your manager’s boss’s POV.
One thing you can do is request a performance review with either your VP or manager. Say you want to set goals and expectations for the next 6 months, to ensure you keep growing in your career. Show up with a plan of what you want to learn and accomplish, as well as your strengths and weaknesses, so you know what you have to work on. Ask them to develop a game plan for you, so it’s not subjective that you’re hitting you’re objectives.
Part of your plan can be addressing where your current manager is falling short. The challenge for you will be finding a non-aggressive or non-defensive way to say that you’re not learning the right skills from your manager.
“Partners” are comparing to you an Associate about a VP? Huh
I feel for you and have had my fair share of terrible managers, to the point where they began ruining my mental health. I wouldn’t be direct about finding a new manager or team, but be sly about looking around. If I were you, I wouldn’t approach the VP because it may come back to bite you. I’ve also left an agency after 6 months—-when you know, you know. Good luck!
