Honestly, I never waste a long layover sitting around. If there’s time, I always leave the airport to explore—it’s way less risky than people think as long as you know the train schedule or ride-share availability.
For me, airport lounges are the way to go—free snacks, comfy chairs, and sometimes even showers. If I don’t feel like splurging on a lounge pass, I map out restaurants and shops to explore in the terminal. I also try to find airports with unique features—like the butterfly garden in Singapore or the yoga room in San Francisco.

If you’re gonna have a 9 hour layover may as well make it 24h + and go sightseeing.
3-5 hours, pay for lounge,
5+ hours check out the town if you can.
I normally don’t intentionally plan for long layovers. If it happens, my activities depend on where I am and how much time I have. If it’s less than 5 hours, I’m definitely in the airport, using the lounge (or lounge hop in bigger airports like Heathrow - which is really fun) or if it’s long layover, I tend get out of the airport. If you’re stuck in Doha for an extended period of time, you can buy one of their transit city tours. I’ve gone out of the airport in Seoul before for a few hours. Just find a locker to leave your carry-on and etc.
I would recommend getting lunch or coffee in the city for the 9 hr+ layovers. I also have good experiences with the airport lounges especially for far flung destinations. For the Frankfurt airport, you can easily get on the train to the city from the airport and back.
