You probably should have communicated better to your company as you made changes. All is not lost, though. First, you don't know if they are requiring people to come back. So the first step is finding that out.
The second step, if they are requiring it and you don't want to move back, could get very tricky. They probably would be in their rights to fire you for not showing up to work. Would they do that? Depends on the company, the manager, and your relationship with them.
They wouldn't HAVE to offer you severance since they are basically just asking you to come to work and you're saying no. They might. They might not.
Some folks are being a little harsh with you. Yeah, you kinda messed up how you handled this. But now, put your big boy/girl/other pants on and have those awkward conversations and figure it out.
Whatever happens, it's not the end of the world.
Thank you! Your response is very helpful.

Did you speak to your manager about the move prior to doing it ?
Thx OMD1, VP1, OMD2 - helpful responses. Yes, I’m looking forward to more concrete plans + will keep my eyes out for any local/remote jobs

I also moved from my city during the pandemic, but I did this with a plan that I’d quit if they needed us back in the office. I assume you also considered the possibilities. Are you talking to any agencies in your new city?
Yes! I am under the full assumption that I’ll quit if we need to go back, just wanted to hear thoughts on how agencies would approach it on their end
Did you change your address with HR?
As someone noted above, there are tax implications for the company. They are not legally allowed to employ outside of certain states. What state do you live in now?
You can fill out a remote work request form and hope they accept it. I recommend doing it sooner rather than later because it would be harder for them to backfill you now.
Good luck!
