If you are technical, it usually becomes increasingly difficult to progress up the ladder solely as an Individual Contributor. Your real impact and corresponding compensation is really related to your soft skills. You don’t necessarily have to be a full-time manager. Work on networking inside and outside the company, become a SME and “go to” person if you can, your presentation skills both formal and informal off-the-cuff, your ability to talk in terms of business value, your ability to influence, your ability to delegate and get your hands off the keyboard.
Absolutely, soft skills matter a lot even for ICs. Technical mastery plus influence and business understanding can create real impact without managing a team.
I think at my company there is a seniority technical route where they don’t manage but have more power and status
That’s great to hear. Clear technical ladders with influence and recognition make it easier for senior ICs to grow without switching to management
