Also, our firm is getting rid of productivity bonuses for associates and going to purely discretionary bonuses. Discretionary bonuses have been exceedingly rare in the past unless you're bringing in your own business (which I'm not as a third year).
Yes, we're talking actual collections, which we can view for ourselves as associates. My practice area has been steady through the pandemic and has gotten busier in recent months as they laid off several under performing associates in our practice group. I think you're correct that it might be helpful to point this out when it comes time to discuss discretionary bonuses.
I’ve heard that rule of thumb is primarily for partners, not associates. Could be wrong. I think you will have better luck using the gap as negotiating leverage come bonus time (deferred compensation) than you will having the firm bring up your base salary.
