Just accepted an offer for a Strategy Director role at another agency, fully leapfrogging the Associate Director level, and I’m worried I’m not prepared. Any advice? Is there like…a book I can read?

If you’re asking strangers online how to do your job, are you sure you’re ready for a Director level job? Being a director is about being someone people want to work with; who inspires and mentors, and whom a client sees as a confidante. You should be able to lead pitches, help teams win new business with your skills, and be able to make quick decisions on complex pieces of business.
If you don’t know how to do the job it will show. And ultimately will affect your own confidence. This isn’t what you want to hear of course, but maybe have a think of this about whether this really is the right move rn. There’s plenty of value in taking time to learn the mid levels, not everything is about economic value and title. Most CSO’s (I’m married to one) would agree that you need to have been doing the new job before you get promoted, hence the reason that ASD level exists.
(I’m a Strategy Director in London, 13 year exp.)

like

Much of it is about attitude, and you won’t learn that from a book. Experience can’t be bought or crammed for. Good luck.

You got hired for a reason. If the agency believes you can do it, you can. Go crush it!

like

I skipped it too - you got this!

Saw a post on here earlier asking about the ASD role and how it doesn’t even exist in some places.

Under qualified people get hired for big money jobs all the time. Not at all saying this is you but I am saying don’t slash your own paycheck proactively and hinder yourself from an opportunity you obviously have the desire to succeed at and grow into.

Do your best and you’ll be doing better than a lot of folks out there in leadership roles.

like

Did you also skip senior strategist

like

Then you’ll probably be alright.

Set boundaries. Know your threshold of where you can flex outside your capabilities and what is beyond that. Hold that line as much as you can to yourself, not just for the sake of your professional career but for your client and your team. Did they give you a specific job description of your roles and responsibilities? Some strategy directors I know are just really really good at a type of strategic need e.g. creative briefs and that's how they advanced even if they haven't yet picked up other director skills. Focus on promoting your best asset so people know why you're qualified. For the rest of the responsibilities that you feel you need to ramp up on, just play new guy/girl card and say you want to understand how things work at their agency so you can optimize their strategy process. If they don't have a process even better tbh - then you can just test pilot what you think makes the most sense and acknowledge it's a new process so if it doesn't work you can keep trying. Good luck!! Also as a director you may likely have to manage people - empower and partner with them to manage your team. I can assure you people would rather work with you to come up with a solution than follow someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

like

Do you know what a strategy director does? Then go do it. You took the job, there are tons of other folks jobs riding on your abilities now. Welcome to the big leagues.

Some agencies don't even have 'associate director' level. If you got an offer, you're probably at the right level.

How difficult is it to juggle a remote role with a hybrid role?

My current role is hybrid with at least two days a week in office. However, with the potential economic downturn, I'm considering holding on to the role to supplement my income.

I'm new to the overemployed movement, so I'm evaluating the feasibility of holding onto the hybrid role and the remote position.

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Advice/suggestions please:
Let’s say you were interviewing for a global client lead role - at the holding co level - for one of WPP, Omnicom or IPG.

What questions would you ask in the interview phase?
What concerns would you have?
If you had your pick of essentially the same role at all three of those holding companies which would you pick? Or not pick?

If you have any insight/two cents you up for sharing to help me out, thank you!
