Just curious, is anyone using the harkness discussion model for reading longer works in class, and if so, are there any modifications you have made to better facilitate this sort of discussion in your classroom?

I tend to use this model as an end-of-unit assessment. Throughout the unit, students create their own questions for each chapter (part of their work for each chapter) and then pick 4 (or more depending on groups sizes/ allotted time) to ask their groups. I give them a variety of prompts that I want them to answer and their questions must fit into those prompts (ex: womanhood in the ___). I check throughout the unit to ensure that they have higher-level thinking questions.
Discussions usually last 25-30 minutes.
This is harder with distance learning but since my district requires students to go to at least one block of office hours a week, I am able to make appointments and give each group 20 minutes

I’ll have to look into this model. I think one of my colleagues uses the model in her AP Lang classes.
