I like being a mentor, I just don't like managing day to say. I'd rather work collaboratively on a team than run one.
Ask yourself this question do you like getting paid more?
If so act accordingly or get out it's unfair to the people you manage.
Go client side. Agency structure isn't for you and it's not fair to those under you.
if you do not want to manage a team, let the next manager below you help you do that. Give them the reigns but do not lead your team having them you as their leader when you're not. Try to delegate as much so it's easier for you. I seriously don't get why managers pull rank yet at the same time complain about managing people. If you do not want to manage, do not become a manager is the best thing I've read today. Thank you VPCD1
You can stick to mentoring and have your second in command do the "managing". Up to you to decide on the delineation of those things.
This is all because nobody invests time and developing/training people into management roles. It's not easy or something you just miraculously figure out. And then there are those who are just not cut out for it, but conscious training would help tremendously...
Sounds like you might be a fantastic manager! The best art director I ever worked with was when I was a junior designer. I was fresh out of college and he made me feel just as valuable as the senior designers. Every project was collaborative. And he was the most respected art director in the department. You don't have to choose! FYI -- I would have worked for him forever if not for a terrible commute.
OP, you answered your question with that second sentence in your follow-up comment. There's not much else to say, other than repeat the same point with different words. A mentor is not a manager, even though a manager should be a mentor too.
That said, spend some time thinking about the "why" behind not wanting to run a team. Is it because you always want to be liked? You don't like admin stuff? You don't like being a leader?
I'm the same way! And I'm a director. I'm not very good at it. I'd rather just do it myself and I find it hard to set the line of "you liking me" and "you respecting me".
If you hire the right people, managing them is easy.
Leading people is more important than managing people. Learn to lead and the rest falls into line.
I felt the same way and found I was only feeling satisfied at work when I needed to step in and do planner-level work. I left the agency side and now there's no one below me and it's great 👍
Why's that?
I've had plenty of bosses who weren't the least bit interested in managing people. Didn't hurt them and it taught me to be self-sufficient.
What do you mean by managing people? If you do not like mentoring than don't. Just manage the client/work load fairly and be nice to everyone
