Just wrapped up Audit and CEO has not signed rep letter. Today is deadline to issue financials to investors, lenders, government. Have to stop by CEOs office who gets short with me. “I’ve only had this for a few days what is your rush?” I kill myself for months for the audited financials only to get yelled at. The alternative is I miss a deadline, credit lines get shut off, investors start harassing, government fines us and I get fired for not submitting on time.

Dealing with CEOs is always tricky. They always move to the beat of their own drum. If they ask a question like that, best to be honest and simply give him the information is a short and concise message. Next time, communicate the top 2 items that will be affected. He may not care. but give him the information as it's his decision. The credit lines and investors and fines are his problem. I would lead with the investors, always. That's what he'll care about most IMHO

It’s your job to get yelled at but also have to be blunt at him cause the as you said - “he’s not thinking straight”. Make him accountable too even if he’s the CEO. You’ll get fired either way.

Idk if I’m just too tired reading this, but it’s their job to get yelled at? Ya uh no. Will we get yelled at and have to eat it sometimes, sure. But definitely ain’t my job and any client that does yell at my team is surely going to be considered the shit client

You are overthinking this. “What’s the rush?” Sir, the deadline is today.
Hopefully you listed the deadline on the original email that was a few days ago. Take a step back and realize that you are paid to handle a section of the company, and sometimes what you feel is important doesn’t resonate with someone who deals with the entire company. Not saying you are wrong in this instance, but most directors/VPs feel their domain is the most important without regard to whatever else is going on.

Document everything. It won't help at all, but when you're on unemployment, you can go back and read your notes and feel good about yourself.

Hate that this is true. One thing I learned in public accounting is that you can have all the CYA e-mails in the world, but if your boss wants something to be your fault, it's going to be your fault.

The Board will not be amused by a technical default. Honestly, the head of accounting and the Treasurer should be all over the CFO about this who in turn should be all over the CEO.

like

There is always a fine line with whose “fault” it is. If you didn’t provide him clear information upon sending him the rep letter (because this is a very important document for EY’s CYA) which shouldn’t be signed lightly and should provide him with BOTH enough time for him to review AND. very clear deadlines. This could be on you and your knowledge of his personality and personal preferences.

like

Yep, getting to know your boss is a very important thing. So you can work with him and make sure he has sufficient time and notice to take care of it next year. It might come down to going into his office a month or two before the financials are due and having a conversation with him about the financials and what he needs from you to make it as easy as possible on him.

Aww you worry to much.

That sounds like a difficult situation. You have to be the bigger person in dealing with the CEO and be calm, cool and collective, no matter what the CEO says to you. All you can do is explain the situation and explain the consequences of not signing the letter in a timely fashion. And then the onus is on the CEO to address this. Once you get by this year, I would recommend you be more proactive with the CEO and give the CEO a heads up about audited financials, the deadline and try to make sure the financials and rep letter are scheduled so they can be resolved on time.

Does he know the deadline?

Hopefully you’re reminding him cause otherwise you’re taking shit for no reason

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

Adverse selection is a huge issue in trading. You never have perfect information and your decision won’t be perfect for the outcome. This usually means you’re too small in winners and too large in losers.

As markets crash we’re seeing something similar. People are ignoring bad outcomes when they should be working that much harder to protect previous gains and find new ideas. Lower traffic in this thread is a symptom of this phenomenon. Don’t quit just as the value of incremental effort ramps.
