Kearney 🐠: considering applying for an associate position but I’m concerned I’m not experienced enough and may be better suited to the senior business analyst role. My details: Applied science undergrad, MSc in Strategic management from top European B school, 3 YOE at big4 consulting (public sector and consumer goods project exp.) any suggestions/thoughts as to which role I should target are greatly appreciated!

Varies a bit by region, but with 3 YOE you’re deff safe applying for an SBA role but associate is possible if your interview performance was fantastic. Other thing to keep in mind OP is that progression cycles are fairly quick. If you came in at SBA, you’ve got a fair shot to make associate within a year assuming performance matches up.

Excellent, thanks so much for this! It’s for the UAE firm if that makes a difference. Good to hear it can be quick progression though. Thanks again!

Generally speaking, all MBA’s come in as associates, any other advanced degrees and/or industry hires come in as Senior Business Analysts. I would probably target the associate role with your background and assuming you’re confident with case interviews. I agree with the other advice that SBA may be the safer choice. The time to promotion is very quick for SBAs since there is such a wide range of experience within the group.

Thanks K2! I’ve actually never done a case interview but starting to prep at the moment so I don’t know how I’d stack up against others with more experience in it!

I would recommend targeting SBA unless you already have close to a year experience in the post-MBA equivalent role at your firm. BA —> Associate is generally 3YOE (varies slightly by region) for our hires straight out of undergrad, but you will be compared to applicants with MBAs and generally 4+ YOE going for the associate role

Thanks K3. SBA it is!

Interview feedback: my answers weren’t concrete enough. I answered questions by sharing my work process, then sharing an example from prior projects and in the example I included how I prepare, who I involve, what that looks like day to day, types of required meetings and what is discussed, how I make decisions, etc. I’m looking for tips on how I can address this feedback? I have fulfilled the responsibilities of the role I applied for so I have the experience. Just need to frame it right.

I suck at case interviews. :( Engineering undergrad and currently in a tech consulting role. Feel like I lack general business knowledge. Had an interview today for a Strategy position and feeling discouraged. I am great at setting up a framework but I struggle with progressing the case (anticipating what’s next) and the math. What resources can I use that don’t require spending $200-400 on a course? Or, if it really is a matter of taking a course, which one should I take?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power. I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about. However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?

Drive 4 hours to client site or fly with a connection (total commute time ~5 hours)? I'd get about 400 in mileage per week from mileage but obviously 4 hours in a car sucks and I'd lose 1k status.
