Try to make the move into advisory if you can. Most young accountants are trying to escape accounting currently.
High stress, long hours, and low pay result in an undesirable profession.
Yes. I enjoyed tax at first but got burnt out in public very quickly. Went to industry and hated my job. Was so depressed at the thought of doing it for 30 more years. I finally went back to public. So far I love my job. It’s been about a year. I’ve set very very firm boundaries and I keep myself accountable for the tasks I take on, delivering on time, communicating if timelines shift, and I watch my hours like a hawk to make sure I’m always keeping up with my charge hours, and also not putting in too much time over my budgets. Sometimes it’s necessary but doing it chronically is how I got burnt out the last time. I finally actually enjoy my job - most days. I can see myself sticking with it for a long time. There’s a lot of different things you could try with your background, I’d give something a shot and if you don’t like it try something else. Try internal audit. Accounting. Controller type roles. Heck even try a rotation in tax! Anything to give yourself an idea of what else is out there.
I felt the same way for a long time and actually used to work at Wipfli. For me the staff and senior years were very hard, I felt very similarly to you. After about a year of being a manager my role changed enough that I actually really enjoyed it. Was more so a project manager, teacher, supervisor and got involved in some pretty cool firm initiatives vs doing grunt work. I left about a year ago and despite my title, feel like I’m back to doing the staff/senior level work and am hating my job for the most part again. I’m honestly considering boomeranging back to Wipfli or going to a similar sized firm to get back into what I like.
Have you talked to your PC or leaders to see if they have any other opportunities/initiatives you could get involved in? Have you considered changing industries or practices (tax, consulting, etc)? In my experience leaders were always open to getting a good employee exposure to an area they think they may like better. Feel free to PM me if you’d like to talk further. Good luck!
I’ve heard similar perspectives from others about the grass not being greener in IA or other industry roles. Many of my colleagues have jumped ship and ended up returning w/in a few years. Glad to hear things ended up working out for you. Thanks for sharing!
