Ya I don think it was talked about too much and a lot of people seem to find similar type jobs or retirement jobs before they retire and others just want to enjoy retirement not realizing it can get pretty boring after a while. I am learning and creating a life post retirement and it’s a whole new world for me
I’m retiring in a couple of weeks. I can’t imagine a military-style transition course being offered on the state’s dime. Our Department, like most, is extremely short staffed and everyone of us that leaves is difficult to replace (not even factoring in the experience going out the door). Departments rightly should be focusing their efforts on replacing us once it becomes clear we are leaving. On the flip side, resources spent on retention, could also help with staffing shortages.
Yup. Well, I'm 40 now. I didn't retire, I quit. I'm not afraid of sharing the reasons because I leave with honors. In my country, most of law enforcement officers who do retire or quit will work for security companies. In my country, you don't get other opportunities. I plan to do P.I. however, there is no school for that right here. We barely have a GED University. I guess I'll have to move to another country. Is there any American here? You all have many opportunities. P.I., Bail officer, security company, you name it.
I was an armed security officer 12 to 16 hour shifts 6 days a week doing about 80 hours. That burned me out. 80hours plus all the shit that happens during my shifts there's a lot of crime went from thinking oh this state is nice and safe to holy crap when I switched careers into sorta law enforcement
After 16 years I was forgotten as soon as I left. I transitioned to a corporate security manager fairly easily. It’s unheard of for police depts to offer career counseling. The only time I experienced transition help was when my enlistment ended and in college.
