You are like 2 years late. Manhattan is now the new Brooklyn.
Williamsburg, park slope, bushwik are good brooklyn neighborhoods. Also try Astoria and LIC in queens
Downtown Brooklyn and Dumbo are both cool areas. I'd just recommend trying to be close to a subway stop (<= 1/10 of a mile). I've lived up to about 2/5 of a mile from a stop, and you don't realize how much of a difference it makes. Brooklyn tends to be more spread out than Manhattan, so it can be somewhat harder to find an apt with a close stop.
Yeah, areas near the Q aren’t bad. You’d be better suited for Williamsburg though. The L isn’t as reliable right now, but way more to do
The L is a nightmare on the weekend rn. I went for Smorgasburg, and what was suppose to be 30 min according to google maps ended up taking an hour...
Just avoid midtown and you’ll be fine
Nah we should convince him to get a spot as close to Penn Station as possible
Downtown Brooklyn is fine. There are lots of new buildings and it’s got good subway access. But, the neighborhood itself is meh and a commute to midtown can be somewhat long. I would try for something with more character— slightly further out in bk or somewhere in Manhattan.
Also, would caution against finding a permanent place to live before you get here. Do air bnb for a month while you look at places in person. The leasing cycle here is crazy fast so anything you rent more than like, 2 weeks out is likely to be a scam or have some serious issue
I don’t think many people here live on BK. Downtown BK is super boring - it’s high rises and chain stores. If you want a nice looking and fun neighborhood go west to BK heights / cobble hill / Carroll gardens for true brownstone Brooklyn. Or do red hook if you’re adventurous, or dumbo if you want a cooler spot and have some extra money. Plenty of nice spots to the east to, but as LEK pointed out distance from the subway hurts
