I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

When I was laid off years ago, I sprung into action. Called all of the recruiters I knew, and was interviewing as soon as a week after the layoff. About 8 weeks later I accepted another job for $12K more a year. Don't let a layoff get you down...it's an opportunity to find something better.
Grey just won Revlon. They might be hiring.
Worked at a tech company and was laid after 6 years. Took a startup job 4 weeks later but it closed after 6 months but they gave us a lot of advance notice. Started a new job the day after the startup closed. Used my two severance checks to pay off my student loans and stayed with the new company for 8 years. Treat looking for a job like its your new job. I think that and networking hard is what helped me find something so quickly.
It saved my career. I was dying in an agency where politics ruled the day. Once you fell out of favor, you were fucked. I could not believe the number of people who reached out to me when it happened. I had maintained agency relationships from years past and those people got me freelance which led to my dream job which led to a few very nice awards. 😉 Hang in there. Network like crazy. Be open to any and all opportunities.
Plus side: layoff mid summer is way better than lay off mid winter!
I've had a few layoffs - they've always led to a better paying job and in one case a jump in title.
One PM was let go this past Monday and share the news on social media. Ad friends help him to find a job. He will start working again this coming Monday. He was unemployed for 4 days. That was amazing
Such a small world, this industry. That's why it pays to be a decent human. We don't forget.
Also despite some postings here to the contrary, rock stars and great performers DO get laid off. The people that make those decisions are rarely involved in the day to day. They make weird decisions based on numbers and politics. One creative laid off with me had just sold in one of the agency's most high profile projects of that year. It's all a crap shoot. Do good work and help those around you and you'll be fine when you need help.
Got canned a month ago. Got a long term freelance gig this week.
I got laid off after over 6 years at one agency. It totally sucked but I needed to get out of there. I had so many people actively help me and ended up with a job in a better city where I make 50k more and work less. If you've been good to people, this is a time when people will be good to you. You just have to ask (and I was pretty shameless about asking for specifics) and people want to help.
Very true. It's a door to a new opportunity.
@Director1, laid after 6 years! Congrats! 🎉
I was laid off in April and had a job a month later at the coolest agency in town (and also a $15K pay increase i didn't ask for!)
My only regret is that when I got laid off, it was in the dead of winter. I had been thinking about leaving anyway, but getting fired was the kick in the ass I needed to get serious about my career again and shake off the cobwebs of staying in a bad situation with no opportunities too long.
So true. It's happened to most people at least once. People really do want to help.
