The idea of “mortal sin” is a Catholic doctrine and not really aligned with Scripture.
C2, I think we are dealing with the issue Fulton Sheen raised….
“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be”
It’s sounds like your Catholic. I grew up in the Catholic Church and facilitated bibles study for young adults. I can tell the distinction between mortal and venial sins isn’t supported scripture.
My advice to you is first to pray, your relationship with The lord is founding on your prayer life. How can know him if don’t speak with him. Prayers of thanks, prayers for wisdom, prayers for guidance, etc.
Second, remember your human and the only one to walk this earth blameless and Sinless was Jesus Christ. When you sin, ask for God’s forgiveness and make practical efforts to avoid or resist the thing thats tempting you. In your instance, if it’s lust than blocking pornography, getting someone to help keep you accountable when your struggling, taking control of thoughts are steps you can put in place to align your actions with your heart for God.
C2 I believe the Bible alone, not the Catholic Church and it’s unfortunate need to create additional rules, policies and ambiguities that confuse people like the author, dilute the incredible miracle of Gods love for us, and are nowhere to be found in God’s word.
I think your missing the seeking forgiveness part and sins being washed away with Christs Blood. While the law wasn’t done away with, Christ did come to fulfill it. I’d ask if you don’t mind me asking what sin do you feel is holding you back? You don’t have to answer but just think that whatever it is it is to too much. Hence Paul despite the fact he persecuted Christians was still used by Christ. And Despite David’s faults he was a man after Gods heart.
I’m a mid 20s male so basically everything under the umbrella of lust
A couple things come to mind here: first the sacrament of Reconciliation is a splendid gift of grace from God that many people don’t avail themselves of often enough. Don’t be afraid to discuss these things and concerns with your priest or minister. Set up time for a lengthier discussion.
Lust is a particularly difficult sin to overcome for many people because of the age we live in. You’re not alone. There is a lot of advice out there in terms of how to do better. I think what has been most helpful to me is framing things in a positive way: Envision your future life with your family and work towards that goal. Instead of being distracted by other things. Be that person.
Most importantly remember that God loves us all and does not want us to fail. He so loved the world that he sent his Son to save us. We’re not perfect, but we are called to follow Jesus’s example as best we can.
Pope Francis reminded us today of a wonderful simple prayer from Pope John Paul I:
“Lord, take me as I am, with my defects, with my shortcomings, but help me become what you desire me to be.”
🙏
As long as you believe you will be saved
You are saved by grace, not by works. Ephesians 2:8-9. God wants to be with you as his creation, as a flawed human, and show you his love, not judge you for not being god
We’re all sinners at the end of the day, and the Lord calls to the sinners, not the righteous amongst us.
No matter how hard we try, we live in a society where there is so much temptation that only the best of us can resist. For me, I know what my daily sins are and what makes me imperfect, however, the Bible has taught me that I can still be a source of good, inspiration, and hope for my family and loved ones despite my sins. And by continuing to follow the Bible, praying for forgiveness, and repenting, I can still find the blessings my life has given me in spite of all my sins.
Righteous is as filthy rags…. Don’t be discouraged. There are things we need to do, but Love God and serve him with a pure heart and you’ll be fine.
The notion of eternal punishment has been misunderstood and is contrary to biblical law. I would read "Judgments of the Divine Law" (free online) for a brilliant exposition on the matter. It will help set your mind at ease, as it did mine.
