On the broader topic, I honestly have a hard time making a case to leave McKinsey that has not to do with travel + family balance. The impact we achieve, coupled with the talent level we have at the Firm is extremely hard to match. It always amazes me how many bright, ambitious, and hard working people we have around us, and that makes all the difference in the world to me.
@A1, what you miss is the salary progression. At MBB, if you are distinctive you almost double your salary every year. In the industry, good luck with 20%. At least at McKinsey, income growth is exponential
Much more pay for fewer hours worked, matched health benefits, and 8 weeks vacation.
The things people use as a proxy to measure their anatomy... Boys, you both have impressive health plans.
My wife works at Google and uses McKinsey’s healthcare because it is SO much better...
McK2, you double salary every year? 180-360-720-1.4-2.9? An MBA hire goes to 2.9M in 5 years? I’m not so sure about that. Also that’s not even exponential, for what it’s worth.
Concur with BCG1, would take better WLB and more money without losing anything else. For me it's not worth doing it in any other case. I'd rather leave to industry where I'd get paid more and work less otherwise
Ugh, PL - no need to a rude about it. Plenty of BCG folks have shared here and yes, there are better bene’s in the Tech Industry in select cases.
Don’t mean to dull your snobby moment there.
Agree with BCG 1. Under-reported benefit is out health plan. It’s really generous
I left BCG to build out my expertise in Digital Strategy and new business models. Actually skipped big 4 and went to an IT integrator.
Distinctive (top review) raises tend to be 30%. This is more the year you make AP as you get your 30%, plus half a share of profit sharing. The year you make partner is also larger.
Mck2’s comment about doubling was aggressive if taken literally. That said, the five year progression can still be impressive. Five years is on the faster side for making partner, but not that uncommon. First year partner comp is $700-850k, depending on profit sharing. It’s not 2.9, but it’s not bad.
Why big 4?
We get MBB folks who are looking to specialize more quickly. We also have several laterals at the partner level, but those seem to go back and forth and tend to be for more bespoke reasons.
Can promise that they do not come for improved WLB or health benefits lol.
^ uhh, have you seen our benefits? Unlike it gets too much better :)
To answer the question; highly unlikely I would move outside MBB (within consulting) unless $$ significantly higher for less work
BCG - i wont name them publicly - but PPO coverage with a large provider (from the entire family), zero monthly copay, and everything in network has zero copay. Drugs are zero copay unless it’s name brand and then i think it’s $10.
I believe BCG has a $5 copay per doctor visit.
I’m not putting my nose up at your coverage... it’s amazingly good. I just know some tech companies are offering more 100% coverages to recruit talent. I have a family member who is a tech recruiter and is seeing this in packages being offered.
ACN benefits pale in comparison.
We’re 100% covered in network. No copays.
I don’t see me leaving for another consulting firm.
Friend works for RBC. Wife works for McK. He said McK is the best healthcare plan he ever saw
The question was what would make us move - not what is happening at MBB vs Big4. I wouldn’t move unless it was way less hours...
Whoa, that's a bug...
