Brother or sister, I'm so sorry you had to go through that. It's not fair. And it's not right. You deserve to be seen as an individual, and not as a symbol of something "other".
It's easy for me to forget that if you express an identity that isn't white,male, or Christian, you run the risk of being seen not as an individual but as the representative of some group. When I'm reminded of the burdens that women, people of color, and those of other religious backgounds have to bear, I am both ashamed of this part of our culture, and immensely inspired by your success, despite of it.
It would be easy for me to say something like, "These are not good clients for you." At the same time, I have to recognize that you are suffering economically and are faced with choices in ways that white men from Protestant upbringings like myself don't have to deal with. It's not right and it should change.
Of course, I don't have an easy solution for you. At the same time, please know that I am on your side and in your corner rooting for you. And, when I can, I will do what I can to confront attitudes like you faced and let those who hold them know that they cannot hold these beliefs unchallenged.
Finally, I know you won't let this experience slow you down! Keep moving forward!

RJ2, KKK consisted of Southern Whites who were Democrats, no denying it. But that group bears no resemblance to the Democrats today, except for the occasional moron. The KKK was a vehicle to oppose the Republican Reconstruction era policies. By the 60’s the Democrats became the party of reform. This included equal rights for blacks, women, etc. Things flipped flop. We can give labels but it boils down to what are we doing to unify the country. I feel our president should unify not divide us. Oh and that snide remark of my public education, yeah sure if it makes you feel superior. I did go to public school, dad died when I was 18 and no plan for college. I worked and paid my own way through college. Can you say the same? We are both at the same company. Not the million dollar producer yet but I should hit that number October, worst case scenario Jan, 2020. Did I mention I’m a woman? 🤷🏻♀️
When I’m asked why I detest this president, this is why! He has emboldened the racist. Anyone that voted for him, no doubt you know what they stand for. Don’t bother with the prospect.
Hey RJ1, if you would condemn the actions of Democrats in Virginia, I hope you do the same when Republicans in DC express views that further racial stereotypes.
However, I would hazard to guess that you aren't actually bothered by the actions of Gov. Northam and the VA attorney general. I would bet that what bothers you is the your perceptions that Democrats who advocate for racial or gender justice are holier-than-thou hypocrites. You probably think that in our hearts, we are just as racist as anyone else.
If I'm right about my guess, I hope you can see that at the root of this argument is the belief that racist and sexist behavior is acceptable. It isn't.
Please know that racism and sexism isn't primarily about hatred (though sometimes hatred is part of it). It's about reinforcing systems, institutions, and attitudes that benefit white folks and men at the expense of women, people of color, and others.
In my mind, at least, one of the first steps to address real problems in racial and gender injustice is to abandon our blindness, as uncomfortable as it may be, and start to see how us white, straight, men benefit from our culture.
Please believe me when I tell you that I'm just as likely (if not more so) to fall into these traps of thinking and beliefs as any other straight, white guy in America. And there are a lot of times in my past that I wish I would have acted differently. So if you measured my history against my present aspirations for justice, you might find no small degree of inconsistency.
I'm just trying to get better, see more clearly, make amends, where I can, and make incremental progress towards justice.
I say this to you with a bit of trepidation, and with love.
(BTW, I have made a lot of assumptions here that might not apply to you. Forgive me for what I got wrong. Regardless, I hope there's something here you can use in your own journey towards being a better person.)
