Even if expectation is truly 9-5, I would also think about whether you’ll be able to turn off the former biglaw associate must be responsive 24/7 part of your brain.

I can’t help but feel stuck in my career. I’m a licensed attorney in another country, but been working as a law clerk in a firm for about a year now. I was hoping to take the NY bar in February but the foreign law graduate restrictions won’t allow. Now, I have to wait till July! I can’t help but feel this way, and as much as I love my company, I’m beginning to dislike the role. Maybe it’s an ‘ego’ thing? Anyone ever been in this position? How did you get over it?

Help! I got offered a starting salary of $140K, +15% bonus, + like 500 shares equity, for an in-house commercial contracts attorney role. I’ve been told by other attorneys there that most weeks are 50-60 hour weeks (much less than ideal as I have three very young children and am hoping to be more available to them). I have 10 years experience in house, 5+ years in commercial contracts. I think I should go back with at least $150k, but should I go even higher? Should I ask for a signing bonus?

I work at a “big” law firm for my market (mountain west). 2020 was my first full year here. Do most firms gives their associates raises and end of year? I came from a really small firm and have only been practicing for 2 full years so i don’t know much else. I’m not expecting a raise because frankly, i didn’t hit the billable requirement and I’d say I’m an average associate at this point. Just curious as to what it typical. Out of curiosity, how do firms treat tattoos and piercings? I have five tattoos and it’s never been an issue (they’re small and I can cover most up), but I’m at a mid-size firm in a small Canadian city and was surprised to meet a fairly senior associate from a national firm with a nose ring, and we recently hired a lawyer with a sleeve (which he also mostly covers). Is it a regional thing? I always figured I’d have to cover up but on the odd occasion mine have been noticed it’s been positive!
