Mid-level litigator in big law who is headed in house soon. The in house gig pays incredibly well (about cravath scale) and promises a true 9-5 schedule, which is really needed with a 5 month old baby. Still, I can’t help feeling uneasy/uncertain about the move and what I am leaving behind. Looking for a pep talk that the grass really is greener on the other side (which I think it probably is)!

What in-house role pays that well? You are lucky!

likesmart

This is close to unheard of, especially for a litigator. You could grind another 5 years in biglaw and not get an offer this good when you burn out.

like

Started this week actually! It’s such a different experience, but so far I like it. I’m also coming from corporate and am at a startup, so definitely not a typical in-house exit

like

Cravath level pay for 9-5 (no billables) with a newborn? I’d give my left arm for that.

like

Yes, I got very lucky. Maybe mostly I have a fear of the unknown: will I like the work, will I bored, is this a long-term career trajectory for me, etc. But it is an unbelievably good offer that will give me time to focus on my kid, and I’m grateful.

How did you find such a great position? Would seriously appreciate tips!

like

I'm 5.5 years in my in-house role (only attorney at a 500 person company), single mom with an 8 & 10 year old. Pay isn't at that level, it's not perfect, and it depends on the business and team, but most days, I'd say you'd have to drag me out. I hope you LOVE it!!

like

Congrats on finding a role that works for you!!

Where do you actually want to work? What kind of work? In house is its own career path. If this is the type of work you want to do anyway, this is a great situation on all fronts

like

Are you destined for partner at big law? If not, kind of a no brainer. I’d take the 9 to 5 with a grain of salt. It’s normally 9 to 5 until it is 24/7. There were times when I worked harder in house than I did in big law but it was relatively rarely.

like

I think I had a shot at partner based on what I was told, but I just don’t have it in me to grind like that for 5 more years or more for the possibility of partner, and then continue some form of grind once a partner—especially with a young kid already and potentially more to come.

Point taken about cadence of work in house!

I hate you lol. I spent a year helping my partner search for IHC roles as a BL senior lit associate. They struck out and had to stay at a firm, and NONE of the IHC roles paid Cravath. Finding IHC roles from BL lit is an absolutely crummy, luck-filled process. Finding one that pays cravath market for 9-5, and coming here to ask if it’s worth it, is like asking if you should cash your lottery ticket bc you don’t want to pay extra taxes 😂 Delete this and go accept your offer, please!

I am generally uncomfortable when I’m around my mother-in-law’s husband.

While he is overall a decent guy, his anger issues, yelling at his wife for the slightest issue, and insulting nature makes me uncomfortable and triggers my own anger due to his blatant disrespect for just about everyone around him.

My mother-in-law says he’s worked on things, but it’s been 10 years of this and I’m not sure I want such behavior around my wife and our kids since we’re trying to conceive soon (cont).

Question about inclusion…. I’ve been teaching inclusion for 5 years so I’m still a newb, but a first year coworker of mine said she got points off on her observation because her kids were scattered in the classroom and she was having to move from kid to kid to assist. While I see the point of putting them together for convenience, I don’t agree with this at all! To me this is like singling them out by putting them all together instead of INCLUDED amongst peers. What do y’all think?

Is the tax exemption limit (of 25000) under 80DDB for both parents or 25000 for each parent?

So in short - 25K+25K = 50K for Both Parents or is it just 25K for both.
