Midlevel evaluating an in-house offer: $215k comp, “competitive” bonuses, but small (less than 5) attorney legal term, & in interviews, there were many mentions of late nights and not always getting coverage on vacations. People seem great but worried that it’ll just be the same grind for less pay. How would you approach? What would you do?

Hard no IMO

Huge pass

No. Mainly because of the evening work and poor coverage, $215 base for a midlevel isn’t horrible but without knowing bonus and equity the TC could be low. I’m on a small legal team and make more than that base with 6yoe and have competitive bonus and equity, but almost zero evening work and can fully disconnect on PTO. Don’t take a pay cut to work firm hours.

like

What year are you? That’s low but maybe for a 4th year decent but less so 6/7.

No way. The whole point of going in house is to have meaningfully better WLB.

Also - true hybrid work policy (better than my current firm)

Id say absolutely not for all of the reasons the others have mentioned

At least they're transparent about the downsides but the fact that they're so transparent about it means it's super prevalent so...yea hard no

Yea if it's one off instances of that happening to various members of the team, fine. But if everyone is saying that and being so blase about it, that doesn't seem great

Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
