You can pick only 2 out of 3:
1) less expensive
2) family friendly
3) within 45 mins of commute
3 out of 3 has already been picked by folks decade ago
Here are some options:
Oakland or some area close to SFO - cheaper option and closer. Would not vouch for family friendly/safety though, especially Oakland.
Fremont / Daly City - decent price and still not too far. Traffic can be painful if you choose to drive into the city but there are BART option.
South of SF to San Jose area - aside from places next to google, Facebook etc, you can find decent price range places. But commute can be challenging with just some train options which aren’t as convenient as Bart imho.
Dublin/Pleasanton/Livermore - about 50 miles from SF. You can still get into the city with BART in an hour or you can choose to drive 6am or earlier in the morning for 45 mins. Great suburbs for family. And price are cheap compare to SF or even other option. Just a bit far from city life.
Overall, 45 mins commute can be a challenge as it may take 45 mins even in the city during rush hour. I’d suggest to look for option with accessible to Bart
Agree with assoc2...might want to live in city as you won’t save TOO much more living outside. Also depends if you have children or not and if you are working outside of city.
Family friendly neighborhoods in city: Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, Potrero Hill, Glen Park, Sunset, Richmond, Cow Hollow,
In the same boat. Accepted an offer from Apple and moving there soon. Looking to rent for a year and check out some areas before diving into the housing market. Renting my current house.
NYC yo 😎
You working at Facebook?
Will you (and SO if applicable) both be working in SF?
Rest of Bay Area is not that much cheaper than downtown. So, you might as well live next to office in downtown SF and skip the car payments.
Well, 45 min no traffic is 2 hours in traffic.
Concord and surrounding coyotes that are served by BART
Cities
Atherton
Oakland (12 miles away) can be an hour commute into the city some days of the week
Tracy or Modesto.
Alameda, Dublin, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Pleasant Hill
If you go Oakland, stays above the 580

Anything between 880-580 is trouble.
La county... by plane
Oakland is not unsafe. Jack London square and some other neighborhoods are actually super nice. It’s more than 45 minutes drive though. Bay bridge is the worst. But Oakland has bart so you can use that.
45 minutes at 4 am or 8 am?
Richmond, Sunset, Glen Park. Just be close to a MUNI metro line or BART
