My firm has a 9-year partnership track as of a year or two ago. It has grown quickly from 5 to 7 to 9 in the past 10 or so years. In the written document that sets out the criteria for partnership, it basically says that your billable hours need to go up every year. Our minimum is 1900. I’m wondering how normal this increasing billables requirement is? I am torn between thinking it’s sensible and thinking it’s another example of law firms treating associates like machines.

Seems like a stupid requirement that legitimately encourages you to work less so that beating your hours in future years will be easier

like

Sounds easy: 1900 -> 1901 -> 1902 … -> 1909

Well that’s what I thought too until they told me 1950 for next year!

For clarification—I was told that my goal next year should be 1950. But surely they’re not planning to increase by 50 every year.

like

That’s what I was thinking, A1. The word on the street is that the partnership track has increased to 9 years because the firm is too partner-heavy right now, so I’m thinking this requirement is also a reflection of that.

like

Our partners seem to bill less and less each year so Maybe an upward climb then a downward slope? I think your firm has an odd system. And also too long of a partner track

I am a new associate (1 month in mid-tier firm) and I struggle to get work to fill up the whole day. In honest time, i get about 3-5 billable hours a day. Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
