What do you bring to the table and how is it going to improve the company's performance? Couch the language in terms of hypothetical ROI. Make it clear your impact is worth the heightened cost. I usually counter 10-15% or so over what they initially offer and go from there.
Was the salary range shared with you by the recruiter? If so, it would help determine where the initial offer is and the room you have to negotiate. If you give them a range in your screening interview does the offer align with it? If it’s lower you can refer back to that range.
Many companies are slow to proactively adjust their salaries and offers to the current market. Being open with them about your salary at your former company could help your negotiation especially if the gap is large. Just be sure to continue to express your excitement about the opportunity and your openness to work with them to find a number that satisfies both parties. I was able to negotiate additional 20k doing this, but I knew the salary range, and based on how quickly I went through the interview process I knew I was the top candidate.
Best of luck!
Why would you consider taking a pay cut?
From my perspective, it wasn’t that serious and wasn’t dm necessary. Anyway…apologies for offending you. As I said, good luck and wishing you the best 🙂
Make it about yourself. Talk up your experience and how you can be a valuable employee. It's usually unwise to mention that you'd be taking a pay cut, as that injects a negative note. If you negotiate a bit, and you're confident talking about yourself, you may not be taking as much of a cut anyway.
