I can say on good authority we have little to no human feces in the streets of Boston. For now. It’s a big plus over SF
Chief
Oh I've met great people there. I've also witnessed numerous violent crimes, car break-ins, and walked past plenty of used needles and been screamed at by presumably homeless drug addicts.
OP, caveat to the comments above - they’re only describing downtown SF. Bay Area is a lot more than the negatives shown in the news… world class food/wineries, best national parks, ski resorts, coast line, temperate weather year-round, jobs, schools, etc. Boston isn’t even that cheap either. Nowhere in the US can provide all these benefits within 1-2 hour driving range from your home, wherever you may be. It is expensive but you also get a lot in return.
EY3, it is definitely one of the most expensive cities. But as I’ve listed, it’s for good reason because there are so many incentives that drive up demand. Fun place as a young professional if you’re in the city, and then not impossible to get a house with a spouse and dual income in the burbs.
The MA commonwealth has probably the best public school system in the country. The state REALLY cares about their public schools. Your kids’ futures are what matter most.

Boston
Rising Star
For raising a family and thinking about your kids’ futures, Boston definitely. Weather will be tough if you’re not used to it (but much better than dealing with Cali’s dangerous climate/weather including their random wildfires), that’s the only thing. In general, lots of opportunities across all industries in the East, plus Boston is definitely growing more and more for tech. Good train system. Most of the other states are nearby and accessible by car (or even Amtrak).
It’s still expensive (especially the city itself), try to find a decent suburb to live in.
What industries do you work in or specialize in? Boston is great for bio/pharma and finance / fin tech. Obviously more options for big tech in SF.

Boston. SF changed a lot with covid. Homelessness is out of hand and taking over the city.
You couldn’t pay me to live in SF. It’s a legit shii hole. Boston all day
Downtown SF is a human cesspool and imo one of the worst places on earth to raise a child, so try to avoid it.
That being said, there are some really nice Bay Area suburbs like Pleasanton, Danville, .etc
Boston is fine but miserably cold like the others have said.
Is remote work not an option? If it was you could look more into Southern California like San Diego or Orange County which are better places to have a family by orders of magnitude
Boston! SF has better/more food options and the winter is much better, but Boston is less expensive, just as fun, great access to other cool cities, and more interesting
Boston is cheaper, though you lose out on weather. Prioritize accordingly. Also think about where both of you may want to find new jobs in a few years.
California simply has too much environmental unknowns for me to ever consider moving there and raising a family. Consistent water shortages, fire season year round, power brownouts and blackouts. Lovely state to visit. Permanent residence there is iffy.
How well do you tolerate cold weather? Cause that's a third of the year in Boston. On the other hand, what are your thoughts on wildfires? Cause fire season is now all year round in CA.
Id probably choose Boston. Though i love the accessibility of national parks and amazing hiking in SF, Boston is more affordable and not in constant droughts. Lots of good schools around Boston, too.
It’s almost may and people still have their heat on here. It gets cold in October, so it’s more than 1/3 of the year for sure. OP is living in CT so won’t be different than what he is used to
I’ve heard Boston schools are great…😂 not actually a Harvard joke.
Yeah just write off the west coast cities as that version of future America where society has collapsed. We’re hanging by a string over here. No police, cities aren’t safe, homeless camps are everywhere.
