My wife just got a job offer and we have the option of moving to either Boston or San Francisco. Thoughts on how to think through this? We are planning to start a family in the next couple of years.

I can say on good authority we have little to no human feces in the streets of Boston. For now. It’s a big plus over SF

likefunnysmart

Oh I've met great people there. I've also witnessed numerous violent crimes, car break-ins, and walked past plenty of used needles and been screamed at by presumably homeless drug addicts.

like

OP, caveat to the comments above - they’re only describing downtown SF. Bay Area is a lot more than the negatives shown in the news… world class food/wineries, best national parks, ski resorts, coast line, temperate weather year-round, jobs, schools, etc. Boston isn’t even that cheap either. Nowhere in the US can provide all these benefits within 1-2 hour driving range from your home, wherever you may be. It is expensive but you also get a lot in return.

like

EY3, it is definitely one of the most expensive cities. But as I’ve listed, it’s for good reason because there are so many incentives that drive up demand. Fun place as a young professional if you’re in the city, and then not impossible to get a house with a spouse and dual income in the burbs.

Boston

For raising family ….it is no brainer ….Boston. No place in US is better in terms of schooling and healthcare

like

I live in the East Bay of SF and love it. Our neighborhood is quiet and safe, but my commute to downtown SF is only 30min by train.

Bonus: no snow. (I grew up in the Midwest, I’m over it.)

likehelpful

If you are thinking about your kids Boston… Massachusetts has one of the top school systems in the nation.

like

Boston schools are amazing. SF has good schools in pockets, Boston has good schools everywhere.

likesmart

This is false. Lots of schools in the city of Boston and close towns are horrible. Overall, there are tons of amazing options around (both public and private, with some of the best in the country) but it’s far from everywhere.

like

Bay Area easily imo. But it will be expensive. I’d consider East Bay if you go that route.

likehelpful

🥱

Raising family would be quite expensive in either location. I’d be thinking 5 years out with your financial planning.

likesmart

Personally I’d choose Boston every day.
Boston is “more” affordable, more family friendly, a much safer city environment, and a more interesting city IMO.
As someone in the Bay Area, jealous of the Boston option.

like

Dont go to San Francisco:
1. Unreasonably and illogically high prices.
2. Weird ass Cali laws
3. Faeces in the street.

Honestly go to Boston; among the two Boston would offer a better atmosphere, especially when raising the children right.

like

I live in Chicago and was just in SF for a few days. Would avoid that mess if possible. Go Boston

like

Boston bro. All the way.

Grew up in the Bay Area (there for 25 years in South Bay, SF, East Bay) and now live abroad. Bay Area was a great place to grow up! Everything is a short drive away. Disneyland is only 6-7 hours (depending on where in Bay you are coming from), Sonoma/Napa, Tahoe, Yosemite, beach, redwoods are all closer. There are no seasons though in SF. Outside SF (like in Contra Costa, parts of peninsula, Santa Clara counties) there are two seasons: hot and somewhat cold (but not really cold compared to Boston). Boston has traditionally had the edge on culture but Tamara Rojo going to SF Ballet would tip the balance on that one for me. Make of that what you will.

like

I have lived 12y in SF and have been in Boston for 5y now. would her job be in SF downtown? What do you value most, where are you located now?

like

Yes, I think she would be downtown in both places, and going to the office (so would want to live close by). We’re in Connecticut now, so we’re familiar with the cold (although Cali weather would be nice). We’re obviously looking to save/invest with the double income, but also want to enjoy quality of life.

Boston. SF is lawless and smells

like

I live in Boston and am fond of it for now but you have to either be okay with the cold or in a position where you can leave between like January and March or so. The weather here is horrific. The average high is below 60 over half the year and it rains probably 2x a week on average.

Boston

like

I’m a Boston native currently living in Boston; lived in SF for 3 years. I would choose Boston:
- cheaper
- much more family friendly (best public schools in the country)
- more accessible (don’t need to drive an hour to get to acceptable suburbs, good enough commuter rail system that is broader than the Caltrain)
- diversity isn’t great, but is getting better

like

IMO SF is a no brainer

like

Yeah a no brainer to not move there lol. It’s literally homelessness central but u gotta pay 2k+

Let's say Family consists of husband , wife and a kid . Is the compensation high at PWC? Is there a possible moving expenses? Any insight or advice would help me make a decision. Thank you!
