We traded our 2014 Ford Escape last year for a 2021 Palisade after doing similar research to what you’re doing. (We had another kid on the way). Everything pointed us to the Kia and Hyundai SUVs for the greatest value for the dollar, and I believe that’s mostly accurate. At the time with pandemic vehicle shortages starting to hit harder, the Telluride was selling above market so it made our decision easier. Overall I’d give the Palisade a B+ after living with it for a year. Good space, comfortable drive, decent tech. My complaints are mostly first-world problems/minor inconveniences: the push button gearbox is annoying in that it requires attention when doing things like a 3-point turn. The seats don’t automatically set to the driver settings based on the key fob (it’s a button inside the door). The HUD inconsistently sets itself to the wrong height and the menu to fix it is fairly far down the settings tree. It has a physical gas cap instead of the capless (which even our 2014 Ford had figured out). Again, none of these are material faults, just… little paper cuts. Feel free to DM me here or ping me at work if you want to chat.
Thanks, Rob! Leaning toward the Telluride...
I know more than a few people with the telluride and they love it. If you haven’t already, I would actually ask both dealerships whether a test drive weekend is possible. Once upon a time (when inventory was a thing) some dealerships would let you take the car for a day or two. Helped us decide between a two brands when we were looking.
I’m not sure what car review and ratings can be considered trustworthy anymore, but for what it’s worth, those two have been at the top of Consumer Reports ratings since they came out. Initially the Palisade was 1 and the Telluride 2, but they have swapped and the Telluride is now their best overall in that category. I will look at both. My wife is hung up against the Kia because of the prior brand image thing; we’ll see how that goes.
Not the question but on vehicles with kids: Once we were on the path to 3 kids, we went mini-van aren't have no RAGRETS. The kids bring able to open/close doors with a push button is good design.
Get the telluride! We love ours. Put 23k miles on it in just 1 year and still no complaints. We bought but buy vs lease is really just a break ever calc depending on rates at the time.
Looking at the S…is the manual lift gate close a deal breaker??
These are getting sold before even hitting the lots. I’m leaning towards putting a deposit on an incoming 2022 S trim.
I test drove the telluride, and the kia carnival (among many other suvs and vans). Telluride was definitely best suv, but still no where near as good as the carnival (or the Honda odessey for that matter). If you can get over the pride of not owning a mini van, your experience will be much better.
I’m several months into my carnival and i love it
Any thoughts on the VW Atlas?
I’m done with VAG. Granted I have only had their lower-end cars (Jetta, A3) so maybe the nicer models are better quality, but they’ve been utter crap for reliability.
CR gives that model their lowest rating for predicted reliability and moderate ratings for everything else.
Ok what about Subaru Ascent? We have an Outback already...
I’m not trying to be the naysayer, really!
I was not impressed with our Outback years ago and between my own experience and CR’s similar very low reliability rating for it, I’m planning to say away from the Ascent.
Our Outback was underpowered (again, a theme for me buying mid-tier trim levels :)), and also had many mechanical and electrical problems.
I bought a Telluride SX a few months ago and love it. Great features without a crazy price tag.
Telluride is awesome. You won’t regret it.

The S trim is pretty crappy compared to the extras the EX and SX have which include some safety features. I would do EX as your minimum. SX if some of the extras there matter for you.
